Syria - Turkey calling for NATO support

.....................................................................................

UPDATE for October 4, 2012:
[Haaretz, Tel Aviv / Reuters]

- Turkey's parliament gave authorization on Thursday for military operations outside Turkish borders if the government deemed them necessary.

- Turkish artillery hit targets near Syria's Tel Abyad border town for a second day on Thursday, killing several Syrian soldiers according to activists and security sources. Targeted Syrian position is being regarded as the origin of yesterday's shelling that killed at least five Turkish civilians.

- Turkey says, Syria apologized via UN for the mortar strike that killed five Turkish citizens the day before.

Syrian mortar fire killing 5 Turkish civilians (women and children) in the Turkish border town of Akcakale, has triggered off a dangerous response from Turkey that is now seeking NATO support for a military involvement of Turkey's allies. A NATO emergency meeting has just ended in Brussels, however, no official statement has been issued so far.

It seems that isolated Syrian mortar fire has already been answered by Turkish shelling on a very low scale. Similar shellings from the Syrian side have been observed earlier but remained without consequences. The problem can be seen in a concentration of small villages in the border region between both countries where any intense fighting would sooner or later produce a heavy death toll among civilians.
