China Netizens - The Yellow Wave
One time after the millenium year of 2000, Chinese language websites first outnumbered English language sites.
In its 29th Statistics Report on the State of China's Internet Development, China's Internet Information Center (CNNIC) had published that by the end of December 2011, the number of Chinese households using the web would have increased to 250 Million. The web then became the most important medium of communication for its users when fetching news. And in January 2012, Chinese media reported that China's internet population had risen to 500 Million "netizens".
But it is the 56th Statistics Report from CNNIC, published in July 2025, which comes about with an even more interesting evaluation:
中国互联网络信息中心(CNNIC)2025年7月:截至2025年6月,中国大陆网民规模达11.23亿人,互联网普及率为79.7%。中国大陆手机网民规模达11.16亿,网民中使用手机上网的比例为 99.4%。
As of June 2025, the number of Internet users in mainland China will reach 1.123 billion, with an Internet penetration rate of 79.7%. The number of mobile Internet users in mainland China will reach 1.116 billion, with 99.4% of Internet users accessing the Internet via mobile devices.
In his book "The Digital Silk Road", first published in 2021, Jonathan Hillman, a top-ranking specialist on international strategic studies, wrote that China is rewiring the world, through vast infrastructure projects which already extend from the ocean floor to outer space, from Africa's megacities to rural America. In doing so, the global order is being rewritten.
