Following the mighty uproar caused by China's first homebuilt aircraft carrier being launched, another news item regarding China's navy became the focus of interest of foreign media. According to foreign media reports, China's first amphibious assault ship of the 075 class should be completed in 2020. Its tonnage corresponds to that of the "Wasp", America's biggest amphibious assault ship. This would help China to apply helicopters, such matching with the U.S.

US Reacting on North Korean Threat

At about the same time, the English website of AL-Jazeera reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has promised bigger "gift packages" following Pyongyang's latest missile test, which is a statement that ratchets up already high tensions.

Kim supervised a new ballistic missile test on Monday, controlled by a precision guidance system, and ordered the development of more powerful strategic weapons to defend the country against the US, state media reported.

Kim said the reclusive state would develop more powerful weapons in multiple phases.

"He expressed the conviction that it would make a greater leap forward in this spirit to send a bigger 'gift package' to the Yankees" in retaliation for American military provocation, KCNA quoted Kim as saying.

The missile launched was equipped with an advanced automated pre-launch sequence compared with previous versions of the "Hwasong" rockets, North Korea's name for its Scud-class missiles, KCNA news agency said on Tuesday.

That indicated the North had launched a modified Scud-class missile, as South Korea's military has said.

Syria - US Arming Kurdish Units

Only some hours ago, the Trump administration declared its intention to arm Kurdish units in their efforts to reconquer the Syrian town of ar-Raqqa from ISIL (Daesh) which is their most important stronghold after the Iraqi army earlier regained essential parts of Mosul.

This is going to provoke a harsh Turkish reaction as Turkey's president Erdogan already warned the U.S. to support Kurdish fighters. It should be noted that ar-Raqqa is located far away from traditional Kurdish territory.

On Tuesday [May 09] the U.S. department of defense (Pentagon) said that president Donald Trump authorized the arming of Kurdish fighters in Syria "as a measure necessary to ensure a clear victory" in the attack intended to reconquer the town of ar-Raqqa from ISIL organization.

答:在“萨德”反导系统问题上,中方的立场是非常明确的,也是坚定的。我们反对美国在韩国部署“萨德”反导系统,敦促有关方面立即停止部署进程。 同时,我们将坚决采取必要措施,捍卫自身利益。

Answer: As to the question of the THAAD antimissile system, China's position is unusually clear-cut and firm. We are opposing the U.S. deployment of a THAAD antimissile system in South Korea, and we urge the concerned sides to immediately stop the deploying process. At the same time we firmly take the necessary steps to defend our interests.

Editor's Note:

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), formerly Theater High Altitude Area Defense, is a United States Army anti-ballistic missile system designed to shoot down short, medium, and intermediate range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase using a hit-to-kill approach. The missile carries no warhead, but relies on the kinetic energy of impact to destroy the incoming missile. A kinetic energy hit minimizes the risk of exploding conventional warhead ballistic missiles, and nuclear tipped ballistic missiles will not detonate upon a kinetic energy hit.

The Chinese reaction comes shortly after western sources reported the missile-defense system had gone into operation in South Korea last week as a protection against North Korean short and long range missiles. More on NY Times: U.S. Antimissile System Goes Live in South Korea.

North Korea claims the buildup of US troops in Darwin, Australia, is proof America is getting ready for nuclear war.

Its main newspaper is accusing the US of trying to optimise its nuclear readiness in the region, noting it's the largest US military presence in Australia since World War II.

The leader of the Darwin based air-strike force says it's in a strategic location and the US 'stands ready to fight'.

The US deployment to Darwin has been conducted since 2012 and at around 1250 Marines and naval personnel is half the 2500 originally proposed under an agreement between the US and Australia.

Former US Ambassador to Australia John Berry said the situation in North Korea would likely head discussions between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull next week.

The drill came hours after the North launched a ballistic missile in apparent defiance of a concerted US push for tougher international sanctions to curb Pyongyang's nuclear weapons ambitions.

China's Navy - 2nd Aircraft Carrier Launched

我国第二艘航空母舰下水仪式26日上午在
中国船舶重工集团公司大连造船厂举行。

Yesterday, April 26, at 9 am local time and on the 68th birthday of China's navy PLAN, China's 2nd aircraft carrier of the Liaoning-class has been floated off its dry dock at Dalian. The ceremony was attended by members of the Central Committee of China's Communist Party and many high-ranking military leaders.

While the first carrier "Liaoning" was based on the semi-finished Soviet-era vessel "Varyag" which belonged to the Kuznetsov-class, China's second carrier has been completely home-built. Its name is still unknown, but rumours are saying it might probably be named "Shandong" on a later occasion.

A Chinese language news portal quoted by western sources had previously reported that the ship will have an aircraft capacity of 28-36 aircraft split between Chinese Shenyang J-15 fighters and helicopters, which is the same as that of the Liaoning. According to the new vessel's outward apperance, the most significant change from the "Liaoning" seems to be a reconfiguration of the phased array radar panels, with those on the new ship facing diagonally outward on both sides of bridge fore and aft.

The new 50.000 tons aircraft carrier like the fully-operational "Liaoning" might still be able to use heavy SS-N-19 anti-ship guided missiles but which has never been confirmed. 12 SS-N-19 missiles of Soviet-era origin once belonged to the armament of a Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier and might present a serious danger to western ship units if still available, especially when used with a nuclear warhead.

N Korea - Culmination of Tensions Preparing US Strike ?

The following text is a summary from Australian and other western sources on a recent culmination of tensions between North Korea and the U.S. administration of Donald Trump:

North Korea threatens ‘merciless military strikes’ against US, as U.S. vice president Mike Pence visits the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.

The isolated nation has trotted out three of its most senior officials to amp up its war rhetoric against the US.

North Korea’s deputy foreign minister, Sin Hong-chol, has told Al Jazeera that its army is on “maximum alert” after US Vice President Mike Pence visited the demilitarised zone between the two Koreas on Monday.

“The time of dictating orders by brandishing the US military might has gone,” Mr Sin told the Arabic broadcaster. The official made a passing swipe at Mr Trump and his administration, referring to him not as the President but as a “businessman”.

“If those businessmen in power in the US thought of intimidating us by any military or sanction threats — as the [Barack] Obama administration used to do and failed — they will soon find out such threats are useless,” Mr Sin said.

“If we notice any sign of assault on our sovereignty, our army will launch merciless military strikes against the US aggressors, wherever they may exist, from the remote US lands to the American military bases on the Korean Peninsula, such as those of Japan and elsewhere.”

"Mr Trump has tried to use trade incentives to pressure China into doing more to stop North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons", but Mr Sin implied this tactic would not work.

“The nuclear weapon in our possession is not illusion; it is not a commodity that may be traded for American dollars, nor is it for sale. So it cannot be put on the negotiating table with the aim to rip it off,” he said.

The country’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Kim In Ryong, has called the US a “gangster” hellbent on “disturbing peace and stability”. He accused the Trump administration of turning the Korean peninsula into “the world’s biggest hotspot” and creating “a dangerous situation in which a thermonuclear war may break out at any moment”.

“If the United States dares opt for a military action … the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the Americans,” Mr Kim told a news conference at the UN headquarters in New York. “We will take the toughest counteraction against the provocateurs.” He said North Korea was acting in self defence and would respond to any threat of nuclear weapons or intercontinental ballistic missiles “in kind”.

North Korea’s vice foreign minister has also maintained the threatening language, telling the BBC there would be “all-out war” if the US took military action. “We’ll be conducting more missile tests on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis,” Han Song-Ryol said. Mr Trump’s remark that North Korea has “gotta behave” was made off the cuff on Monday when he was asked whether he had any message for North Korea or its leader, Kim Jong-un. His comment comes after a tense weekend on the Korean Peninsula where the North celebrated the 105th birthday of its founding father, Kim Il-sung, with an elaborate military parade on Saturday that showed off its growing missile arsenal. The triumphant procession, intended to show off the nation’s military might, was followed by a major embarrassment for the current leader. A ballistic missile test launched near a submarine base on the country’s east coast failed seconds after lift-off Sunday morning.

The US provoked North Korea’s ire when it sent a naval strike group, including aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and three guided-missile destroyers, to the region ahead of the anniversary, which is one of the biggest days on the country’s calendar.

US vice president Mike Pence visited the South Korean capital Seoul on Monday as part of a tour of Asia, where he warned the North not to test the resolve of the US President on military matters. “The world witnessed the strength and resolve of our new president in actions taken in Syria and Afghanistan,” the US Vice President said. “North Korea would do well not to test his resolve or the strength of the armed forces of the United States in the region.” He said “all options are on the table” in response to North Korea and that the “era of strategic patience is over”. Two North Korean soldiers watched Mr Pence closely as he visited the demilitarised zone on Monday, with one taking photographs of the visiting leader.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Mr Trump would not draw “red lines” over North Korea and he would continue to play his cards “close to his vest” in terms of his military strategy. “The action that he took in Syria showed, when appropriate, this President will take decisive action,” Mr Spicer said, in reference to Mr Trump’s missile attack in April in retaliation to the Middle Eastern nation’s use of chemical weapons against its own people. Mr Spicer also praised China for its “historic” decision to take a “much more active role” against North Korea through economic actions. “I don’t think there’s anybody in the world who would not believe that North Korea’s actions are both provocative and a concern,” Mr Spicer told reporters Monday afternoon.

One security expert told The New York Times, the tension between the US and North Korea looks like “the Cuban missile crisis in slow motion".

On February 27 an external link was added that

Kim Jong Nam killing in a series of news videos.
A shortcut of latest news was added the same day.

On February 13, Kim Jong Nam (photo), elder brother to North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un was assassinated at Kuala Lumpur airport in Malaysia. While North Korea's ambassador to Malaysia denies the identity of the poisoned victim, saying it was some other North Korean, Malaysia has triggered off a comprehensive investigation and called on Pyongyang's ambassador to cooperate.

Kim Jong Nam (above) is known for having criticized the North Korean regime.

An airport surveillance camera is showing Kim Jong Nam being approached by a young woman. Nam was shortly blindfolded by one woman's hands coming from behind his head. That should have been the moment of the poisoning.

Among the arrested persons one woman could be identified as Siti Aisyah, an Indonesian citizen from Serang, West Java (Bantan, Greater Jakarta). She told authorities having been approached in a shopping center the month before by a man who introduced himself as a Japanese delegate and who seemed to be wealthy. He should have given her a tiny sum of money and allegedly convinced her to take part in a TV prank.

Preliminary Analysis Report related to the Kim Jong Nam Poisoning:

Expert: North Korea "highly probably" behind the Kim Jong Nam killing
outside of China where Kim Jong Nam lived under protection in Macao.
[CNN Report]

Please note:
The whole subject has been covered by a series of videos published by CNN. Their site could be seen as a comprehensive source of all events and background information available by Feb. 27. Many other sources of different origin are offering rather bits of information than an overall view on the Kim Jong Nam killing.

Shortcut of latest information available by February 27
assembled from Chinese, Malaysian and U.S. media:

The timeline of the Kim Jong Nam killing now being fully established, it seems that one secretary of the North Korean embassy in K.L. and a representative of the North Korean airline might be involved. Their cooperation has been requested by Malaysian police but was turned down by the embassy. However, Malaysian police is not willing to accept the North Korean position as a high-ranking police officer unequivocally indicated.

During the days of Kim Jong Nam's autopsy, an unauthorized intrusion into the Kuala Lumpur morgue was foiled.

As to the girls who actually committed the assassination, a Vietnamese woman that blindfolded Kim Jong Nam and an Indonesian woman that probably applied deadly VX nerve agent from a vaporizer, their cover story of being convinced to make part of a TV joke has failed to work. At the time VX was found on their bodies, both girls seemed to be either healthy (the Vietnamese) or suffering from "rather small problems" (the Indonesian). This could be seen as a proof that both were prepared in advance with the antidote, a common drug usually available in many hospitals, such that they should have known what they were doing.

On hearing shouts of "America First" and "Buy American" from the White House, those having experienced the cold war era might feel haunted by memories from that time when Eastern and Western politics were dominated by ideology.

Depending on one's personal position there might be different ways of perception for these ambitious adages that are now marking the era of U.S. president Donald Trump.

One possible way to deal with "Buy American" can still be related to the following phrase and which is dating back to the "dark ages" of communism and anti-imperialism:

"We will hang the capitalists with the rope they sell us."

A popular quotation often attributed to different persons like Lenin, Marx and Stalin and who most likely never used that specific stance. Therefore, it might be that this phrase is simply expressing a programmatic adage which doesn't need any personalized origin.

In 1958, Mao Tse Tung adopted that tiny phrase and got even more specific on the subject. The explanation he gave then became a part of his famous Red Booklet:

.....
The United States has set up hundreds of military bases in many countries all over the world. China's territory of Taiwan, Lebanon and all military bases of the United States on foreign soil are so many ropes round the neck of U.S. imperialism. The ropes have been fabricated by the Americans themselves and by nobody else, and it is they themselves who have put the nooses round their own necks, handing the ends of the ropes to the Chinese people, the peoples of the Arab countries and all the peoples of the world who love peace and oppose aggression. The longer the U.S. aggressors remain in those places, the tighter the nooses round their necks will become.

Mao's interpretation of U.S. politics in the 1950ies, seems to be accurate even today and it opens a view on what we recently learnt to be the ultimate guideline of the new Trump era and which should be "America First". One could say Mao is still having the truth, even though China itself has slowly changed from basic socialism to some kind of crude capitalism "à la Américaine" in the meantime.

Nowadays, after persistent political confrontation based on ossified doctrine rather than common sense has given way to complicated supranational conflicts of economic and geopolitical interests in the frame of an irreversible globalization, any national policy of separation might quickly turn out to be counterproductive for the authors of such separation.

The stances "America First - Buy American" could therefore easily turn into some kind of boomerang that hits America where it is intended to hit competing nations. Latest news and comments from different national economies are already pointing in that direction.
